Rick and his wife Sandy Darnell moved to the Village in December 2015, from Scottsdale, Arizona. One of the things Sir Knight Rick never had time for during his working career was to join the Knights of Columbus. He was quite pleased to find such a large and active group at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.
Sir Knight Rick Darnell began his Knights of Columbus journey on December 6, 2016 followed by 2nd and 3rd Degree exemplification on February 26th, 2017. He became a Sir Knight on June 3rd, 2017. Since joining us both Rick and Sandy have been extremely active, supporting many of our activities and taking the lead in planning and arranging the Honey Baked Ham initiative, the Christmas Wreath initiative, and the Domino Pizza initiatives. Both Rick and Sandy spent several days doing “point of sale” contacts before and after Masses in November and December. We appreciate their efforts, enthusiasm, meticulous attention to detail, and the numerous volunteer hours dedicated to raising funds for our charities. Rick has indicated he will soon assume the Program Director responsibilities for the Council, after a turn-over period with Tony Cifelli who has done an outstanding job for several years. It is a pleasure for the Council to present this Family of the Month certificate to the Darnell’s.
Family of the Month Dec 2017 |
Over two-hundred Knights have joined our Council since the millennium; over a hundred other Brothers are no longer with us since then. It’s safe to assume that many current Brothers are therefore unaware of the history of our Council and those Knights that grew this Council to what we have inherited from them. That said, let me tell you about one of our more dedicated Knights.
Sir Knight Russ Harrison has been a pillar of this Council for over 15 years. For example, he was the Knight of the Month in July 2002, Knight of the Month in February 2014, the Grand Knight for the 2005-2006 Fraternal Year—leading the Council to receive the STAR Award, receiving the Contest of Champions Award, and the Daughters of the American Revolution Award. His 4th Degree Offices and contributions also span several years with notable and appreciable accomplishes. The list of his contributions cannot be summarized in a short presentation—he has been involved in literally hundreds of events within our Council and the Assembly over the years.
This month your Officers and Directors felt it imperative we again recognize Brother Russ for his continued dedication and contributions to our Councils’ efforts.
As we attempted to replace the Petit Jean Ham Sale tradition, Russ was asked to take the lead in arranging the online ham sales as well as selling $2,000 worth of gift certificates before and after Masses during parts of November and December. Why Russ? Because he’s an effective and dependable leader, produces tremendous results, and always has a can-do attitude and a record of success in all his endeavors. He personally sold $2,000 of gift certificates and organized and advertised the online website effort with Brothers Darnell and Doyle.
Sir Knight Russ Harrison has the Council's deepest respect and heartfelt appreciation.
Russ Harrison has been and continues to be one of our finest Knights. It is a humble honor for us to again recognize a truly remarkable Sir Knight, our Brother, Russ Harrison.

On December 11th, council Financial Secretary Ed Doyle presented a $1,000 WalMart gift card to Ron Maguire, principal of ALE (Alternative Learning Experience). The card will be used to buy Christmas gifts for needy ALE students in the Jessieville and Fountain Lakes areas.

The Knights of Columbus Council 10208 had a fundraiser to raise money for our Coats for Kids Program. There were over 240 tickets sold and we had a packed house to share fellowship. The Grand Knight, Sir Knight Tom Donnelly, led the evening’s festivities program and was the master of ceremonies. Thanks to all the brother Knights who helped, and to Brother Walter Free for leading the Youth Programs. We met our goal for the night and much more!!

The District 10 Deputy convened the District's Team. Nineteen of our Council Knights and Sir Knights participated in the set-up, registration, or actual ceremonials, along with another 8 Knights from Hot Springs, Benton, and District 16. Another six of our Councils' Knights served a dinner of pulled pork, potato salad, cole-slaw, cake, and Fr. Bill's home-made ice cream. The refreshment center was run by 3 of our Brother Knights. A past State Deputy, the Current State Deputy, two District Directors, and the state Chaplain were present, as well as twenty-eight other guests including 4 Grand Knights.
Attendees seemed well-pleased with our Council's hosting efforts. The Council 10208 Grand Knight appreciates and thanks you for the efforts of all sponsors, ceremonial participants, set-up volunteers, receptionists, and meal servers, and especially congradulates those Knights who advanced in our Brotherhood.
Charity in Action!
Knights and their ladies, wearing bright yellow vests, solicited donations at seven Hot Springs Village locations on the first Friday and Saturday of October. Over 5,000 Villagers donated $7,307 during this two-day effort. 111 volunteers stood two-hours or more collecting donations at the Village gates and business locations. All donors received a “Tootsie Roll” gratuity as a thank you from the Knights. This two-day “Tootsie Roll” portion of the Knight’s campaign was only the “tip of the iceberg” of this fundraising campaign.
Council 10208 Knights also asked their 315 members for individual donations. Knights and Knights’ widows dug deep and contributed an additional $6,585.
In celebration of the success of these many CPID efforts, an “Oktoberfest” dinner took place on the final Saturday of the campaign. A silent auction at the dinner enabled non-monetary gift-donations to be turned into cash for contribution to the campaigns several charitable recipients. An additional $2,350 in “Oktoberfest” receipts added to campaign’s final total of $25,000!
The local charities that will benefit from this campaign include the Special Olympics, Arkansas Camp for the Blind, First Step, Abilities Unlimited, The Caring Place, and ARC Arkansas—all which provide services and care for the intellectually challenged neighbors in the local area. One hundred percent of the monies collected will go to recipient charities.
The Daniel Patrick Sullivan Council 10208 of the Knights of Columbus gratefully thanks all the volunteers, Village residents, local businesses, the KVRE Radio Station, and the Village Voice Newspaper for their collective community outreach generosity.
Special Olympics CEO Terri Weir |
During the October 2017 Member's meeting, the Council welcomed the gifted, dedicated, talented, and dynamic Executive Director and CEO of the Arkansas Special Olympics, Terri Weir. The Grand Knight, Sir Knight Tom Donnelly stated that he first met Terri several years ago, and she’s been an exceptional supporter of our Knights of Columbus efforts at Harding University in Searcy as we set up, run, and dismantle the Olympic Village each year. She arranges and pays our motel accommodations, provides robust young folks to help set up tents, she provides us tables, chairs, water, a fine reception, tee-shirts, and myriad other necessities to make our Special Olympics’ efforts successful. We reciprocate each year with a generous charitable donation to her most worthy cause. Ms. Weir made a wonderful presentation on her organization and was very generous in her appreciation to what our Council does every year supporting the Arkansas Special Olympics.
