Dan and Marge Stehling |
Marge and Dan have been married for 55 years. They have 5 daughters and one son scattered from Texas to Oregon to Utah and to Australia. They have 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Dan and Marge met while attending college at a get acquainted dance in San Antonio TX. After Dan served 2 years in the army including a short stint in Korea, they lived in San Antonio. They then bought the lumber yard from Marge’s father in Rio Hondo TX, 30 miles north of Brownsville.
Dan worked as an administrator for Texas Technical College for 8 years while Marge managed the Lumber Yard with their youngest daughter sleeping under the desk. She served as President of the Valley Lumberman's Association, when women's lib was just beginning.
After living and working in Rio Hondo for 34 years, they moved to the Village in May 1995 and became members of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
Dan became a knight in 1957 and joined the 4th Degree Assembly in 2007. For several years he did publicity for the Council and the Men's Club of which he is also a member. He has volunteered at Olympic Town during Special Olympics and helped transport some of the games from the Village to Searcy. He liked to party with Don Prescott in the Harding University dorms. He helps in the kitchen for breakfasts and the Men's Club fish bakes and has grilled steaks and bratwurst for many years. He has done meals on wheels in the Village and is currently doing meals on wheels in Garland County with other knights who deliver five frozen meals to approximately 35 people every Tuesday.
Dan served for 3 years on the Parish Finance Committee and sang in the choir for 5 years. He has been a lector since 1996, and has been coordinator of the lectors for 3 years.
Marge has been a member of the Sacred Heart Choir for 13 years, is an active member of the Ladies of the Sacred Heart and the St. Jude Guild. She has served as co-chair of the ladies golf tournament. She is a Eucharistic Minister for the homebound and has been the coordinator since 1997.
